Dear Laura,
Dr. Venook (oncologist) at UCSF specializes in esophageal and bilary cancer. Don’t quite know whether he will look at your scans without a personal visit by you and your husband however, it is another option for a second opinion.
Wishing you the very best,
Marions
marionsModeratorDear Laura,
no, he was not able to clarify “favorable” results, neither did he mention the length of time necessary for a prescribed protocol to demonstrate it’s effectiveness.
Simply, I believe, he does not know the answer to this, nor do I think, does anyone else have a plausible, factual analyzes of this disease due to the rarity of occurence and the consequently limited published studies.
Certainly, he would recommmend a chemo therapy protocol if warranted, althought, as he mentioned: “with guarded expectation” thus , he was not able to guarantee a positive outcome.
The postings and blogs on this site however, will give you a wealth of information in re: to people being treated with select chemo protocols and it will confirm the variances in treatments and subsequent responses of the individual patient.
Sorry, I could not be of any more help to you.
Kindly,
Marions
marionsModeratorHello Amy,
My husband also had a hernia following bile duct surgery. We believe him to have strained his abdomen within two days post-surgery, causing his intestine to kink, thus not allowing any food to be digested. In his case, it was a fairly simple procedure and he recovered quickly.
My best to you and your Mom
MarionsmarionsModeratorDear zuzuby,
What I have learned so far is:
The chemo agents you are mentioning are amongst several being used in the fight against this cancer, some with promising results. Unfortunately, it cannot be predicted as to who will respond well, and who doesn’t show any improvement at all.A good place to start is the “What’s working/good news” and the “Experience” section of this forum in order to gain more answers to your questions in addition to, it might be helpful in the decision making process in regards to your Dad’s treatment options.
Hoping and wishing for the very best for your Dad

I agree with Sarah and Jeff. Opinions vary widely when it comes to treatment for this cancer. You might also want to contact a few other physicians such as liver transplant surgeons, possibly someone, who is also specializing in bile duct surgery, in order to verify the current position of non-resection. In some instances, a CT scan plus a copy of the reports is all that is needed for another evaluation however, many times a personal visit is required. It will be highly unlikely for any physician in this country to recommend Dentritic Cell Therapy although, when my husband was battling this disease and he was not responding to the current treatment, I did notice some change of mind. I consider Dendritic Cell Therapy a viable option in the treatment of CC.
More then anything, do not give up hope since many people respond favorably to various treatments.
Wishing the very best for J.J. und you

marionsModeratorDear Mary,
Thank you for sharing this wonderful news with us.
We, the ones having lost a loved one to this disease, more then anyone, are hoping and wishing for no one else to be joining us in the Remembrance section of this forum.
We will always be together in this fight against CC.
Yes, our pain is unbearable however, sharing the joy with those of you who are responding successfully to treatments whatever they may be, eases our pain immensely.
Thank you for warming my heart,
MarionS
marionsModeratorjberg597,
thank you for your thoughs and prayers for my family and me.
It is my wish for no one else to be added to the list of people who were taken by this horrific cancer.
I am taking comfort in your thoughts for us.
Kindly,
MarionsmarionsModeratorBernie,
I thank you for your kind words especially, since you are also grieving over the recent loss of your Mom. My condolences to you, also.
I will continue to share any information about this disease in the hope that others don’t have to go down the dark road so many of us have to endure.
Kindly,
MarionsmarionsModeratorGeoff,
thank you for writing these wonderful words.
I am always looking forward to hearing from you, especially with good news coming our way.
Have not finished compiling my info on hyperthermia but as I had mentioned before, it will be done before April. When are you returning for treatment to Germany?
All the best
MarionsmarionsModeratorDear Maggie,
I appreciate your kind words to my family and me. Thank you for being so thoughtful.

marionsModeratorDear Juster,
my heart if full of sorrow for you and all of us who are sharing in the grief of having lost our beloved ones.
Though my husband passed away one months earlier then yours, I don’t feel any closer to the acceptance of his passing as of yet although, I believe what truly makes me face each day is the recognition that I am so very much needed by my family. This sustains me at this time, but what I have found the most helpful is the permission I gave myself to “feel” the pain in which ever way it manifests itself, may it be anger, hopelessness, sorrow, defeat, fear. Amazingly, I find myself moving through these unprededictable moments by emerging somewhat stronger each and every day.
May all of us find peace.
MarionsmarionsModeratorGeoff,
Wonderful news.
I am still in the process of compiling my information in re: to hyperthermia but I will certainly post before your return visit for treatment in April. So glad to hear about your positive response.

marionsModeratorJmoneypenny, Kate and Peter,
I so very much appreciate your kind words to me and my family. They are well received.
Please, remember to keep up the fight as each one has to approach this disease as his or her personal one. The approaches may differ but the results are to be alike, to keep this disease at bay while looking for a permanent cure.
Thanks again for your kindness
MarionSmarionsModeratorGeoff,
I am absolutely thrilled to hear about your scan results. I have visited the clinic in Cologne in order to have a closer look at the procedures and to gain more insight in to the treatment plans. I will be returning to the US on the 14th of March. Hopefully, I will be able to pass on some information which may be of benefit to others.
Keep sending the good news about your progress.
MarionmarionsModeratorDear Maggie,
my heart breaks knowing that one more wonderful person was ripped out of life due to this horrific disease. My research will also be ongoing.
All my love to you.
