    Jeff,
I hope you get your pain under control. It must be really hard to deal with. Hopefully the radiation will do the trick! You are a tough guy!! Take care of yourself and keep enjoying those pizzas! Mary

I’m sorry you are going through so much and your mother too. It is so hard to watch your loved ones be so sick. High bilirubin does cause chills. Whenever Tom gets those I always suspect that whats going on. I hope they can make your Dad comfortable. I can’t really imagine how hard it is to have him be so distant from all of you but everyone handles things differently and it is just his way. None of us know how we will react when our time cames. I know he knows you all love him and he appreciates all of your care. Hopefully the meds will help him. Take care of yourself and your Mom.
    Carolyn,
I hope they can get your brothers pain under control. It’s hard to believe this cancer can be so aggressive! I hope he gets his wish and makes it long enough for the election. Take care of yourself. We all have to try and stay positive with our loved ones and it can be very hard!! My thoughts and prayers are with you and your brother. Take care, Mary

Yes it gets to be a long day going through all of this as all of you know. We have been really blessed because we’ve had a long reprieve the last year or so. As for the balloon ,that was interesting. They do it with ERCP. a little camera is attached too and they just inflate the balloon when they get to the narrowed area. He was afraid to blow it up too far because it could cause damage to the duct, leakage etc so he just put the stent in to keep it opened and then will try again. We keep wondering why they can’t do duct replacements with pig ducts, They do it with hearts it would be great if they could do it with the liver. I guess there is some research going on. As far as the knees, I need to lose some weight and that will help but it’s hard to walk or bike etc when they hurt so much. This damp Ohio weather doesn’t help!! We had a friend that came back to Ohio last May from Arizona and said she had forgotten she had arthritis until she got back here! Take care everyone. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. I really feel blessed that we have been so fortunate. You always know things could change quickly so we have to enjoy everyday!!! Take care , Mary

    Thanks friends,
We just got back from Columbus and the Doc is sure it’s radiation stricture that is the problem. He inserted a balloon to try and open the duct up and then put in a stent. In 8 weeks he’ll go back in and try the balloon again and remove the stent if he thinks it will stay opened. So good news- like our radiologist said two years ago she’d much rather deal with scar tissue than cancer!! Best wishes everyone! I’m heading to bed, it’s been a long day!! Mary

My husband has to avoid all dairy products. He had his stent removed but he still has problems if he eats too much. I think dairy causes a buildup of mucous which clogs the stent. He also avoids fried foods and does not eat much meat. Lots of fruits and vegetables are best. Best wishes, Mary

    Hi Debrah,
Itching was the first sign for my husband that something was wrong. He has started scratching lately but it is hard to tell whether it is allergies, dry skin or increased bilirubin. I’m glad you got bloodwork. If your bili is elevated than they should check you out to make sure there isn’t a blockage somewhere. My husband had a lot of radiation so now they are worried about scar tissue. Good luck! Mary

    Hi Carrie Ann,
I am glad things are getting straightened out. I tried to e-mail you personally but it won’t go through. E-mail me if you need any help I can give. She will automatically qualify for Medicare if she is given permanent disability but there is over a 2 year wait. My husband is just going to be eligible Dec 1 and he was given permanent disability status July of ’06. SO you will have to continue Medicaid until then. Keep up the supplements and everything you can to help her immune sysyem. You can read about some of the things my husband takes. Will they do chemo or radiation? I would definitely get second or even third opinions. Take care and I hope things continue to improve! Mary

    Hi Sophie,
My husbad has an MRI every three months. I don’t know why but they feel it picks up changes better I guess. When he went to Pittsburgh 18 months ago they did a cat scan. I’d almost like to have him go there again and get scanned just to make sure OSU isn’t missing anything. Mary

My husband was overweight too when he first got sick. In fact that was why he couldn’t get an indiviual health insurance policy or add’l life insurance. He was overweight and had high blood pressure. He lost 70 pounds initially but has put about 35 back on.He needs to lose about 10 again to be at an ideal weight for his body frame. The crazy thing is now except for the cancer his weight and BP would be acceptable to the insurance companies. Anyway I was glad he had the extra weight because it helped sustain him through a lot of days and even weeks of not being able to eat. He really burned it off to the point of being skin and bones! It was terrible.I can’t imagine what he would have looked like if he hadn’t had those extra pounds. Thats my excuse now. You never know when those extra pounds may come in handy! HA! Mary

    Kris,
Good thoughts and prayers coming your way. Enjoy your weekend as much as possible. There must be something to this berry picking. My husband likes to do it too. Even when he was really sick 2 years ago he managed to do it. Of course then he wanted a pie!! Take care and best wishes. We all have our fingers crossed that it is nothing more than constipation!! Sandy,
I’m sorry. You are right, life is never the same. My husband started out at the ER too, at OSU. Dr. Bloomston attempted a resection but had to abort due to the tumor being too far into his right bile duct. He then had chemo and radiation under Dr. Maier(?sp) at the James. That was over 2 years ago and he is doing very well. His tumor is actually gone, the radiation followed by brachytherapy was very successful. So there is hope. Your husband needs to keep his strength up and concentrate on keeping his liver as healthy as possible. Radiation and chemo are very hard on the liver. You can read about the diet and supplements I give to my husband. Others here have different things that have worked for them also. Take care and best wishes for the upcoming treatments. I hope your husband has positive results. You are in good hands at the James! Mary

You have to qualify financially for Medicaid. My husband was unemployed, we just had our farming business so we were able to qualify because neither one of us had a “real” job. We had to cash out all of our assets except our home and one vehicle and basically limit our income. I would stay on Cobra until your Medicaid is approved. Mary

I suppose there may be a difference between states. Tom was granted permanent disability within one month of his application and then they went retro active to the first of July. They said he was disabled as of June 24 when he was first admitted and diagnosed but started his payments from the first of July. I think we got the money deposited for both months around the end of August. I went to a lawyer that gave free consultations about SS disability claims and he gave me the best advice of anyone. HE said to start making calls to your congressmen and Senators etc to try and get this fast tracked. I did and my brother was a close acquaintance with an area congressman and he made calls too. Whether that really helped or not I don’t know but Tom’s case was fast tracked and approved very quickly and allowed him to be eligible for the ABD Medicaid. As far as ALS it is the only disease that allows you to qualify for Medicare immediately without the 2 year waiting period. I don’t know about SS payments. They said somebody somewhere along the line stuck that clause into a bill and it’s been there ever since. All I know is that you really have to be on top of things and without an advocate you are in trouble because there is a huge amount of paperwork and stress involved!!! Mary

    Hi CarrieAnn,
I don’t understand why they would tell you to not talk to the social service people at the hospital. They were the ones that got my husband’s problems taken care of almost immediately. They got the Drs. to sign the paperwork for him to be given disability, they told me everything I needed to do to qualify him for the ABD medicaid and went through everything step by step. Your Drs have to initiate the paperwork and then you have to call Social Security to set up a telephone interview. They were very helpful and sympathetic and with this disease your mother will be accepted right away. They will then get your mother on SSDI or SSI and she will receive a monthly check. By being given disabilty status she will qualify for Medicaid for the Disabled. In 2 + years she will then be able to be on Medicare. Medicaid will exempt her house and 1 vehicle. They do drastically limit your cash assets so everything such as savings, IRAs etc. must be cashed out.You really must pursue this as quickly as possible as her advocate before the bills pile up. Medicaid will go back three months and pay those bills if she would have qualified financially at that time.We only had one week that they wouldn’t cover because I was able to get all the paperwork together and everything cashed out and in order. It took a lot of phone calls and stress but at least we were able to get things covered quickly. I was able to work with the hospital for the one uncovered week because it was a doozy! Almost $40,000 !! One thing you have to understand is that there is a lot of misinformation out there. You need to get the Social workers and Drs together immediately to send the paperwork in and get the process started and call your local Soc. Sec office to step up a telephone interview. You should also contact Job and Family Services because they are the ones that will handle Medicaid. As soon as your mother’s disability is approved she will qualify for coverage as long as her income is low or non-existent. Good luck and let me know if I can help in any way. I feel like I know more about this then some so called “experts “because I’ve been through so much and for over 2 years now! Best wishes! Mary
