SpectatorCindy,
I’m sorry to hear your ct wasn’t what you hoped for. It sounds like a plan is in place so that’s great. I bet it was nice to see Grover. We could all use a Grover in the waiting room.
Let us know hoe chemo goes.Best wishes,

SpectatorDiana,
I’m very sorry to hear the news. What chemo did they suggest? I had Gem/Cis and it dropped my blood counts, but I felt pretty good on it.
Best wishes and keep us posted,

SpectatorMatt,
This is tough. I don’t want your sister to have delays in getting surgery, but it is a big surgery and it’s really important to have an experienced surgeon. I’m not sure where her tumor is located but it would be important for the surgeon to try to get clean margins and if it is coming close to major vessels, it takes a talented surgeon to accomplish that. You also have to worry about complications like bile leaks. I would flat out ask him how many liver resections he has done and also see exactly how long it would take to get it scheduled at Mayo. From what I can tell, he doesn’t appear to be a surgical oncologist or hepatobiliary surgeon.
I would want to hear it from Mayo’s mouth that it would take longer to get it scheduled there.
You said one of his specialties is transplant. Do they even do liver transplants at that hospital? I couldn’t find it on their website.
I’m sorry to be so negative but I want your sister to get the best. Let us know what she decides and best of luck with the surgery.Best of luck and keep us posted.

SpectatorI think they only way they can measure a response is by imaging. Tumor markers are used also, but I’ve heard they are not really accurate.
Best wishes,

SpectatorMatt,
I’m very sorry to hear of your sister’s diagnosis. I hope all goes well with surgery. How old is she? As others have mentioned, Mayo is the best for this type of cancer, so I’m glad she lives so close to it. Keep us posted!

SpectatorI asked my radiation oncologist about perhaps taking some supplements or seeing a naturopath since my last CT showed no cancer. He said he’s not opposed to it but told me to stay aware from mushroom and treebark supplements. He didn’t give me the specific reason.
Best wishes,

SpectatorEli,
Yes, my chemo was split. 3cycles then radiation then 3 more cycles. I’m glad you came to a decision. I hope chemo goes well. Let us know.

SpectatorEli,
This is tough, as you know. So, if you remember, your wife and I are kind of similar. Radiation about killed me, chemo was not so bad. However, my last 2 cycles of gem/cis made my hemoglobin/hematocrit fall off a cliff. I was doing fine until then. My oncologist was kind of hesitant to give me more chemo after radiation because radiation made me so sick and chemo isn’t proven, but I pushed for it, she agreed and said we would stop it if I got sick. I was able to finish my 6 cycles. Now, I have no idea why 6 cycles is the magic number. All I know is that is what was originally recommended so that is what I wanted. If my cancer comes back, I can rest easy knowing I got my full 6 cycles of chemo and full 6wks of radiation. Did it help me? Did it hurt me? Time will tell, but I hated the idea of looking back thinking I didn’t get some type of treatment. My husband also encourages me to get treatment because he says he is selfish and wants me around, but he also says he would support my decision to stop.
It’s such a tough choice. I’m not sure what you should do here. I guess, ultimately the choice is hers. For me, the chemo had more bad effects towards the last 2 cycles, so maybe if she is already having issues it would be best to stop??
Sorry, I know I played both sides here and am probably not being very helpful, but it’s not an easy choice. Just know we will obviously support whatever decision the two of you make. Keep us updated.Take care,
