Cathryn McElvaney (nee Carman)

Cathryn McElvaney (nee Carman), a proud, lifelong Philadelphian, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, April 2, 2021, surrounded by her family.

Cathy was the beloved wife of Gary for the past 39 years. She was the loving mother of Brian, Kevin, and Mary Kate, and proud grandmother to Brie, Maura, and Addison.

Cathy was a proud retiree of the City of Philadelphia. She worked as a crossing guard for 35 years at the corner of Cottman and Roland Ave before she retired in 2012. Cathy was also a devoted animal lover, proud St. Hubert’s alumna, a huge fan of the Beatles, and was rather infamous for her holiday decorating and love of over-the-top celebrations. She was incredibly devoted to her family and friends and was a fierce defender of those that she loved. She was always ready to lend her experience and advice to those who needed it, which helped earn her the much-loved nickname “Chatty Cathy.”

In celebration of her life and to honor her memory, we are initiating a fund-raising campaign for the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation. Cathy’s daughter-in-law Megan was diagnosed with this rare form of bile duct cancer in 2020. Cathy had an incredible spirit of generosity and it was her wish to help fight to end this devastating disease.  The McElvaney family and their friends thank you for honoring Cathy’s memory with your donation.
