Celebrating Seven Years of CholangioConnect

A Vision Takes Shape

In the complex and often isolating world of cholangiocarcinoma, the CholangioConnect program emerged seven years ago as a support for those affected by the disease. This remarkable program, born from the visionary mind of Andy Macias, has since become a lifeline for patients and caregivers navigating the challenges of this rare cancer. Andy’s idea found its first champion in Patricia Maxin, who, driven by compassion and dedication, volunteered her time to lay the foundation for a thriving network of emotional support and resources.

Building a Community of Care

Fred, a patient mentor, and Vincent, a mentee turned mentor, embrace at CCF’s 2024 Annual Conference as they share their CCA journey and CholangioConnect experience.

Patricia Maxin became the program’s first program manager and played a pivotal role in transforming Andy’s vision into reality. Her tireless efforts have helped CholangioConnect blossom into a robust program, training over 180 mentors who support patients and caregivers. These mentors, many of whom have faced cholangiocarcinoma themselves or cared for loved ones with the disease, offer a unique blend of empathy and understanding that can only come from shared experience.

Expanding the Reach

As of July 2024, CholangioConnect has matched over 1,320 mentor requests, extending its supportive embrace to individuals in 18 countries. This global reach underscores the universal need for connection and understanding in the face of serious illness. The program’s success is a testament to the power of community and the difference that compassionate mentorship can make in the lives of those affected by cholangiocarcinoma.

Innovations in Support

“It’s like we’ve known each other forever.” – Marilynn Clark.

January 2024 marked a significant milestone for CholangioConnect with the launch of its bereaved caregiver mentoring services. This initiative recognizes the unique challenges faced by those who have lost loved ones to cholangiocarcinoma, providing them with dedicated support and a safe space to navigate their grief. This addition to the program reflects CholangioConnect’s ongoing commitment to addressing the evolving needs of its community.

Looking Forward

As we celebrate this milestone, we also look to the future with hope and determination. CholangioConnect will continue to grow, evolve, and innovate, ensuring that no one affected by cholangiocarcinoma has to face their journey alone. With a steadfast commitment to emotional support, CholangioConnect is a source of strength for patients and caregivers worldwide.
