Hello, My husband is also stage 4 inoperable. As well as the chemo he takes naturopathic supplements and treatments that he is responding very well to. Not everyone is open to this but I thought I would put it out there.
I can give you more information if you wish. My heart is with you. It is bad enough dealing with this with my husband I couldn’t imagine one of my children. Take care.

Andie, You go girl on your run!! Your dad not to be on painkillers is a victory in itself! Hope the drainage problem is all cleared up.

Jen, Sorry to hear of your Dad’s shoulder. Doug is always afraid of falling in his weakened condition. I hope the hospital bed helps and that he is feeling better for his upcoming birthday!
    Hugs to both of you.

Hi Cheryl, I have chatted through this site with your daughter Jen. We have a lot in common. I know Herb has a big birthday coming up. My husband Doug will be 60 May 3rd and we are looking forward to celebrating it in the sun. We have had a tremendous amount of snow here in Revelstoke and we are ready for Spring! I also have a son and 2 daughters. We were blessed with some wonderful news 2 weeks ago with our son’s engagement! I am so glad you are still finding many things to celebrate, too! Wishing all the best to you and your family. Nancy

Hi Alison, Sorry to hear of your dad’s diagnosis. My husband is 59 and has inoperable stage 4 with mets to liver and bones. The prognosis is not good but we are doing chemo and he is responding well. He is doing better now than 2 months ago. Not everyone responds to chemo but some do! How old is your Dad? I would get a second opinion. Have they tried something for his nausea? Sounds like they could offer more help.
My husband also does naturopathic support which we have been very pleased with. I wish you all the best.

Hi Peony, Sounds like we are on the same schedule!
    Doug’s meds:
    Primal Defense – 3X a day
    L-Trpein – 3x a day
    4000 UI of Vitamin D a day
    Selenium – 200 mcg – 2x a day
    HMF – 2x a day
DCA – 1 capsule dissolved in warm water 2x a day with a Thorne B Complex
HEEL Detox Kit – drops are put into water and sipped throughout the day
(stimulates the key organ systems involved in detoxification and drainage process)
Helixor (mistletoe) given as an injection once daily (easy to inject – very small needle)
Biphosphonates – (Clasteon) 4 daily (for bone mets- also used for osteoporosis)
We were also recommended by the naturopath and bought liquid cartilage extract but Doug has been unable to take it – doesn’t like the taste.
Keeping my fingers crossed for both the boys on their upcoming scans!
    Where do you live?
    Take care and good luck!

Mayra, I feel so much for you and your young daughter. This site has many passings but when it is of a young person it seems even harder.
Your daughter will grow up knowing her dad through you. She will feel him.
It probably will get harder for you once everyone is gone so make sure you have a support network that allows you to grieve however you need to.
I wish I could mend your broken heart.

I am so glad that you are at peace and that your Dad was ready to go fishing and build homes. This is never easy for us loved ones left behind but it sounds like your dad had a gentle passing. Take Care.

Susan, Thinking of you and your family. We all know how tough this cancer is to live with and without. May you find peace through these hard times. I am glad you have such wonderful family support. Randy will be truly missed.

Hi Sharon, My husband Doug (59) has stage 4 cholangiocarcinoma with mets to the liver and bone. We are on cycle 3 of gemcitabine and cisplatin.
We also see a naturopath and Doug takes naturopathic supplements and treatments. He takes pill form supplements at meals and different ones inbetween meals to boost his immunity. We mix “alka powder” in warm water once or twice a day to help bring down the acid levels in his blood (high acid is common in cancer patients). He has a liver detox kit of drops that he puts in water to sip on throughout the day.
Doug takes another pill called DCA twice a day dissolved in warm water. You can read a report about it online by the University of Alberta. The DCA builds up the mitochondria in your cells (which get damaged by cancer). I give him a shot each day of Helixor (mistletoe) which is a natural chemo but it is also boosts the effects of regular chemo. There are many different naturopathic routes that you can discuss with your integrative doctor.
We chose to do both conventional and naturopathic with Doug because his cancer is so advanced but I have read Suzanne Somers book with accounts of people who just did naturopathic. I think one has to believe in whatever path they chose. Our naturopathic doctor supported us fully in the decision to do both. The conventional onocologist said that they prefer that people do not take naturopathic while doing chemo but it was up to us and he wasn’t stongly against.
Doug’s liver markers and tumor markers have been coming down since November. Interestingly he did not start chemo until December 15th, so it was only the naturopathic that was effecting those numbers (started naturopathic in October) After chemo started and we were continuing the naturopathic the numbers dropped even faster – so the combo was good. Next week he gets a scan to see how the tumors look – our fingers are crossed.
I do not know where you live but we are in British Columbia and Doug’s and my extended medical plans cover the naturopathic visits and any testing but unfortunately do not cover medicines. Some can be quite expensive but we are finding them worthwhile.
Oh, Doug takes biphosphonates for his bone mets. The naturopath suggested to see if the onocologist would prescribe them because then they are paid for – which he did.
Sounds like you mom is doing well. I wish you all the best! Let me know if you want more info on the drops and supplements. Take care.

Hi Joolz, My husband takes dexamethasone for nausea for 4 days at chemo time. Did not know it stimulates appetite but that is good! I was concerned about my husbands weight loss and the doctor suggested whey protein powder. Since being on this the past week he has gained 5 lbs. We bought the vanilla flavoured. I have made it with 2 bananas, 3 tbsp of peanut butter, 2 scoops of the whey powder and then fill half of your blender up with milk. Another way is I put in mixed berries and a banana plus the whey powder, some milk and some orange juice. You can come up with all sorts of concoctions! Anyway it seems to be working for him and he likes them! We bought the whey powder at our Pharmasave but health food stores would carry it as well. Good luck. Nancy :)

Thinking of you and your family Lisa. I am so sorry to hear your family now has a double whammy! I hope they have caught the melanoma early! I have 2 friends who have survived melanoma (they are past 5 years). One was caught early and did not need any further treatment past the surgery. My other friend had it in her lympth nodes and she responded well to chemo. They have come a long way with melanoma.
Hugs to you and prayers for all of you.
