    Hi Marion,
I live in the small town of Revelstoke (pop- 8000) in the mountains of British Columbia. We are getting quite well known with our newly developed 3 year old world class ski mountain with the highest vertical drop in North America. Much too indimidating for me so I stick to cross country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter. My husband and kids take up the downhill challenge! Unfortunately, with his illness Doug is unable to go this year.
Our ride to Salmon Arm was uneventful yesterday, but the ride back was a white-knuckled one. It took twice as long as normal to get home but we made it! Today the highway is closed due to accidents and avalanche control! We had 2 feet of snow in the last 24 hours. Looks like it is going to keep up tonight. There will be many happy skiers here. Next week when we go to chemo it is supposed to be cold and clear – much better for driving!
Doug had his best “after chemo day” yet today. He was able to watch a movie tonight – he hasn’t been able to concentrate on tv for awhile. We rejoice in the small milestones. Take care.

I am new to this forum but found “devoncat” an inspiration. She obviously lived her life to the fullest. She will be missed. Family and friends take care.

Hi Melanie, My husband Doug just started the same regimen of chemo on December 15th, so we are with you! We had good news today with his liver numbers much better than last month (don’t know what they all mean, but they are better). Besides the chemo we do naturopathic support – supplements and helixor shots. Don’t know what brought his numbers down, so we will continue it all! Doug is also inoperable with tumors in his liver and bones. He has not been anemic so don’t have any advice on that. He takes a solution from the naturopath to keep his acid level in his blood down.
Doug started getting jaundice in December but his numbers are better now but he has never suffered from the itching.
I certainly know the stress you are going through and the shock of the poor prognosis. I believe even with a poor prognosis one has to believe in living and concentrate on that. We take one day at a time and believe each day is a day that we have survived cancer. Take care. Nancy

Thank you all for your quick response and your informative answers. I did research more on the site. Susan, my husband is 59 – close in age to yours!
Doug had blood work today and all his liver markers were down (bilirubin, etc.)- good news! Off to chemo tomorrow. We are supposed to get a huge snowstorm, so I will have to get away early! We are an hour and fifteen away from the chemo centre through the mountains. A road I have travelled many times in the winter when my kids were younger and in hockey and figure skating, so know it well! All the best to all of you. Nancy

Hi, I can certainly understand your frustrations. We put our trust in a system and when it fails us we feel neglected and that we are just another number on a list. This is why we have to be advocates for our loved ones but in your case one would only believe that the information was being passed along. I would put in a formal complaint to both the hospital and UPenn in the hopes that it will not happen again to you or anyone else. Rejoice in the fact that the reports that weren’t sent were positive. Sounds like your father-in-law is doing well and is definitely a survivor. Here’s to a great New Year!
