Edna Ruth Kern
December 31, 1945 – October 14, 2016
Edna Ruth Kern, passed peacefully with her daughter, Renee and son-n-law, Scott by her side on Friday, October 14, 2016 at the age of 70 after a 2.5 year battle with a rare bile duct cancer called intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma. A Celebration of Life to honor Edna will be held on Monday, November 7, 2016 at 3:30 p.m. at the Lena Pope Marty Leonard Chapel – 3131 Sanguinet Street, Fort Worth, TX.
Did you know Edna? If you did, you wouldn’t forget her! She was UBER smart (MENSA member – although she wasn’t good at tying her shoes..), witty, personable, Type-“A”, kind and funny. When she was first diagnosed doctors told her she’d have between 4-9 months to live, although it surprised many she was here 2.5 years later, I don’t think it surprised her – she was always the consummate overachiever!
Edna spent her formative years in Orlando, Florida with her five siblings. In 1975 she moved to Fort Worth as a single mother to her only child, Renee. Renee was the light of her life and her pride and joy. In 1978 she completed her BBA in 2.5 years, graduating from Texas Wesleyan University, Summa cum Laude all while being a single mother. That same year she started her life long career as an independent insurance agent specializing in business and personal insurance needs. She attained multiple designations throughout her career CLU, ChFC, LUTCF and RHU. One of her colleagues shared they would study for weeks before an exam and she’d borrow books the weekend before and ace it!
Edna was fervent in giving back to her industry and community. She was elected and served tirelessly on numerous boards throughout her career. She was a long-time docent at The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, member of SCORE – Volunteer of Small Business Administration, Fort Worth Association of Health Underwriters, Sales and Marketing Executive Club, All Saint’s Hospital Executive Forum, Tarrant County Association of Health Underwriters, Texas Association of Health Underwriters, National Association of Health Underwriters, and the Women’s Health Forum and Sales and Marketing.
Through countless hours of hard work and dedication Edna obtained the following honors: TAHU “Outstanding Texan of the Year”, NAHU Distinguished Service Award, Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders, Who’s Who in Finance and Industry, Who’s Who in America, MENSA and Financial Notebook Cable TV.
Edna is survived by her daughter Renee, son-n-law, Scott Akers and Siblings: Myron McRorie, Byron McRorie, Karl McRorie, June Bailey and Jean Montiel.
Edna and her daughter Renee request in lieu of flowers contributions be made to HOPE Farm which provides at-risk boys the skills they need to change their communities or The Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation to help fund research and advocacy for this rare cancer.
