The Fifth Annual Quack Out Cholangio 5K Run/Walk Raises Funds for Rare Cancer Research

NEWARK, DELAWARE – The 5th Annual Quack Out Cholangio 5k Run/Walk to Crush Bile Duct Cancer was held May 18th at Midnight Oil Brewing Company in Newark.

The race, hosted by Jan and Dean Meyer of Wilmington, is one of the largest community
fundraisers benefiting the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation’s research efforts. The Foundation is the leading global resource for cholangiocarcinoma (CCA), a rare but aggressive bile duct cancer. It strives to find a cure and improve the quality of life for CCA patients. Monies raised at the Quack Out are earmarked to fund research fellowship grants in hopes of a cure.

This year’s Quack Out, which hosted over 600 participants (both virtual and in-person), is expected to raise approximately $70,000. Members of the cholangiocarcinoma community participated to honor their loved ones, make memories with friends and family, and raise money.

“For the last five years, Jan and Dean have poured their hearts into this event, and every dollar raised has directly benefitted critical research that is changing the course of this disease,” said Stacie Lindsey, the CEO and Founder of the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation. We are so grateful for their efforts and the loving community they have built around this beloved event.”

Jan Meyer, a CCA survivor, knows first-hand what resources are needed to manage this rare cancer.

“As always, we are grateful for our volunteers and sponsors. Once again, Incyte was our main sponsor and had a team of 14  participants,” said Jan. “We also had other generous support from Taiho Oncology, Servier, Ravitz Family Markets, Champion Trophies, Newell Brands, Walmart, Christiana Care, Gordon Fournaris & Mammarella, PA, and more”

The Meyer family has made the difficult decision to no longer hold the 5k and looks forward to transitioning to other less labor-intensive fundraising events in the future.

“Jan and Dean have accomplished so much for patients facing cholangiocarcinoma,” Lindsey said. “Their dedication, even in their hardest times, has helped fund life-changing research. These last five years have brought so many of us unparalleled hope and tremendous optimism for the future.”
