Turning Passion into Impact: Johnny’s Inspiring Tribute to His Father

Johnny Dawson, a senior in high school, has turned his love for chess and his tech skills into a powerful force for good. A skilled chess player, Johnny grew up competing with the support of his father, John Dawson, who passed away from cholangiocarcinoma in 2019 when Johnny was just 13 years old. John would often send out email updates to family and friends after Johnny’s chess matches, remarking on Johnny’s skill and determination. His pride in his son was evident.

Johnny has devoted his free time to helping others through his passions to honor his father’s memory. He single-handedly coded and built a website for his local Chess Without Borders chapter, a community initiative that teaches chess and fosters mentorship. Through this platform, Johnny has raised $2,200 (and counting) for the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation in memory of his dad.

This effort is more than a fundraiser for Johnny—it’s a way to carry forward the values his father instilled in him. By combining his technical expertise, love for chess, and dedication to his father’s memory, Johnny is making an impact far beyond the chessboard.

CCF is deeply grateful for compassionate and innovative supporters like Johnny. His story reminds us of the incredible impact one person can make when they channel their talents and passions into helping others. To learn more about Johnny’s fundraiser, visit his website at  www.cwbnyc.com
