It really is sad in this country, at this time in history, any of us are having to deal with all of this. I don’t want to get political but we must have some sort of universal health care for every citizen in this country. We should not have to deal with all of these financial issues when we are fighting for our lives-it’s inhumane!! Anyway my husband did not have any insurance when he was diagnosed. He worked very hard in his early fifties to become licensed to teach high school science(because there were tons of openings for science teachers !!) but after completing his studies all he was able to get were temporary one year contracts. They always replaced him with younger people. He had worked the year before he was diagnosed and was on unemployment up until about three months before he got sick. We couldn’t afford the Cobra deal- it was $1600/ month for both of us. We were just in the process of trying to get approved for a major medical policy( he had been denied previously due to being overweight and having high blood pressure) when he became ill. I remember my first thought when he became ill and an ambulance was called was- oh no. we don’t have insurance, maybe I can just drive him to the ER. That’s sad. I had to start worrying about money from the first instant he was ill. It turned out that we were better off not having any insurance than we would have been with crappy insurance. The social workers were working with me within days to get him qualified for Medicaid and on SS disability. If we had insurance none of that would have happened-I’d have been on my own. It was VERY tough for a few weeks. We had to cash out his teachers retirement that he had worked so hard for, we each had some money in IRAs which we both had to cash out and I had to cash out my life insurance policy. We basically had to be impoverished as far as cash assets were concerned. We were lucky though because they did not hold our farm against us since it was our home and I was able to continue my little greenhouse business in order to pay our farm payment and taxes. Ohio’s medicaid program has paid for everything with no problems though, so I am very grateful. Even though neither one of us have any retirement left or savings etc it could have been a lot worse. My husband really gets down sometimes about our money situation. He feels well enough to work for someone but no one will hire him. He’s 60.5 years old with a very serious cancer. He would have to have good insurance and then what happens if he lost the job? We’d be right back to square one. He’ll be on Medicare by January so that will ease the financial restraints a little but I keep worrying that they will decide he isn’t disabled enough and kick him off, then what happens if he gets really sick again? It’s ridiculous. I’m going to write a book, maybe I can get on Oprah and talk about all of this! Ha!Ha! Mary

    Thanks Jeff,
Yeah I’m not jumping to the cancer conclusion right away. It’s just with the history it makes you really worry. He’s had so much radiation I don’t know if that would even be an option if it was cancer. My Dad went through that last fall – it was tough. A 30 minute surgery sounds better!! Take care and continue to enjoy your summer. Mary (PS- no chemo for 18 months , just Xeloda then)

I’m sorry Sophie that things didn’t work out. We went through the same thing 2 years ago but at least my husbands liver was healthy. He had some necrosis from the lack of blood flow to his left lobe but no disease. I would really concentrate on supplements and foods that can provide optimal liver health. I did a lot of research and really started giving Tom supplements and foods that weren’t just anti-carcinogenic but were really good for his liver.I really believe it has helped. Also I talked to a women a year ago who told me her husband had CC and cirrhosis and was doing just fine with no treatments what so ever. He had an external drain and they were just scanning him to keep track of things. He had been diagnosed for several years. I guess it just depends on the individual and the type of cancer but there really is hope. Take care and concentrate on getting as healthy as possible! Mary

He was diagnosed with a Klatskin tumor. They tried to resect but were unsuccessful. They did 5 weeks of IMRT radiation with Xeloda followed by brachytherapy. He has not had any additional treatment since Nov. ’06, just bloodwork and MRI every 3 months. He did have a stent in place until this past Feb. I personally was more concerned about the stent and problems with infections even during his treatment course. He had a lot of different drains in place and went through a lot of problems but has been great since- a real miracle! Even his Docs think so and tell other patients about him even though as they say, “They’re not declaring victory yet!” Time will tell but so far so good. You should always remain hopeful! My husband has a great attitude- he just leaves all the worry to me!! I give him a lot of supplements which you can check out on my other posts. I attribute a lot of his good health to those.Try every thing you can and get 2nd or 3rd opinons. He had no mets and continues to have no sign of any. I’m hoping they nuked the tumor before it could jump anywhere else.. Best wishes and good luck with your treatments, Mary

    HI Jeff,
Enjoy yourself in Maine. We went there for our honeymoon almost 28 years ago. I’d like to go back. My son is in Peru until Sept. and my husband wants to go very badly. I figure my son will eventually move there permanently so there’s no rush but then we shouldn’t put things off either. We’ve been living in a state of denial the past year or so but I know things could change very quickly. I just need to win the lottery- then we’d take off , no problem!! Oh well I’m glad to stay home and enjoy our birds and flowers. We have a barn full of swallows that I love to watch. Take care of yourself and we’re sending positive prayers and thoughts your way!! Just keep on fighting!! Mary

    Joyce,
I do have knowledge of Pittsburgh and Dr. Gamblin. We went to see him after my husband had an aborted resection followed by extensive radiation therapy and Xeloda at Ohio State, James Cancer Hospital. Because my husband had responded so well to his treatmen they weren’t sure what to do with him at OSU and I felt we needed a second opinion. Pittsburgh is actually closer to us so we went to see Dr. Gamblin. He did his own scans there and basically verified what the OSU Docs had said, that the tumor was gone. That was 17 months ago and so far there has been no recurrence. We have decided that if he does suffer a recurrence that we will go back to Pittsburgh for treatment because they are very much on the cutting edge of liver cancer treatments. OSU has basically done all they are able to and I’m very grateful for their very aggressive approach of IMRT radiation and brachytherapy. It obviously worked wonders for my husband. Pittsburgh does not do radiation therapy but have other treatments they use and I do believe are more aggresive in their surgical approach. Anyway I hope this helps and best wishes for a successful surgery. You will be in good hands! Take care. Mary

    Candy,
My husband had radiation treatments along with Xeloda. That was followed by brachytherapy. He actually did not have a resection but they tied off the blood supply to the left half of his liver and it completely dissolved away.I believe this cut off the blood supply to the tumor too which helped the chemo and radiation “kill” it. He is tumor free at present and has had no treatments since Nov. 06. His tumor markers are all normal. I really think that chemo and radiation is a good idea for your brother. It really did not have any bad side effects. Mary

    Patty,
You can apply to Roche Pharmaceuticals to get your Xeloda free if you are unable to get it through your medical assistance. Ask the Social Worker at your hospital for details. They gave us four months worth absolutely free since we met their financial requirements. My husband actually only took it 25 days when he was receiving radiation. I gave the extra pills to my sister in law since her insurance would not cover hers. It saved her thousands of dollars. Best wishes. Mary

    Hi Jeff,
I’m glad you had such a great trip! I’m Jealous! We had friends that wanted us to go with them on a cruise around Hawaii this month but we can’t get away in March. I’m busy with my greenhouse plants. I’m still dreaming of Costa Rica this fall though- depending on whether anyone has any money to buy flowers! Ha! They aren’t really an essential item but hopefully people are tired of our long hard winter and will be ready to garden! To answer your question-no. Our Docs have never said anything about diet. In fact I got kind of perturbed at the surgeon originally because he told Tom to go ahead and drink beer and do whatever he wants. I told Tom that was because he thinks you’re going to die and he isn’t going to tell a 59 year old guy with terminal cancer that he can’t drink if he wants to. The truth is Tom never drank hardly at all anyway , just a beer occasionally on a hot summer day. He just liked to have the Doc give me a hard time for not wanting him to drink AT ALL. But as far as I’m concerned I was right and he’s still here and going strong to prove it!We’re just continuing the same diet he’s been doing for almost two years now. I still don’t give him much dairy- just low fat.I can’t get over the idea that he may plug up.
Congrats on your 9 year success. You are really the inspiration here!! Take care- I’m heading outside. We actually have some sun, a break from all the rain and snow!! Mary

    Thanks Kris,
I do appreciate the prayers. You’ll understand when you have kids how much you worry no matter how old they are! I think it almost gets worse because they bring more people into the fold. Grandkids ,etc. It’s my son’s second tour with the Ohio National Guard and even though they have better equipment and training than last time (4 years ago) it’s still a crazy place to be. I’ll be glad when it’s over. As far as our wandering 21 year old, he has been doing crazy things since he was 18. I just keep hoping he’ll settle down and get his college over with. Our daughter lost twins- even though she wasn’t very far along it’s still hard emotionally and physically. She’s young though and healthy and has lots of time. Good luck to you as far as having children. Since things look so much better for you, I hope you are able to go ahead now. They really are worth all the stress and worry!! THe grandkids are what keep my husband going the most I think. He’s very thankful to be around to enjoy them!! Take care and I wish you all the best!

Great news Kris- I’m sure you can’t wait to get the drain out! My husband had his 3 month check-up and MRI and he is still in remission. Great news all around this week! It’s wonderful to have so many positive posts!! It gets pretty depressing around here sometimes so everyone keep up the good work!!! Best wishes, Mary

Thanks guys! He feels better all ready- I think it’s mentally uplifting to know you don’t have a foreign object stuck in you anymore. We stopped to get groceries on the way home and the first thing he said was ” do I still have to watch what I eat?” I tried to limit dairy products because they seemed to cause the stent to clog, as an old dairy farmer that was tough for him!
Anyway Jeff you have a GREAT trip!! There must be something about Hawaii in March. My best friend and her husband are going and my brother and his wife have tickets. They may not make it though because she is fighting recurrent colon cancer and not doing too well.
Take some pictures and post them for us! My dream is to go back to Costa Rica. We went for a 3 week trip for our 25 anniversary before Tom was diagnosed. It’s like a cheap Hawaii! We may make it back now- I was always afraid to travel in case he got clogged up or had an infection. Hopefully that’s over.
Take care and best wishes to all. Mary

    Hi Belle,
My husband has had both stents and drains since diagnosed in June 06. The stents are less bothersome but you have to deal with infection with both. THey usually use stents if possible but if not then they will put in an external drain. They require more care obviuosly, flushing the drainage tube, skin care at the drain site and emptying the bag. The stents just need to be changed every 2-3 months with an ERCP procedure. Take care. Mary
