Thanks to all of you for your good wishes and cheers! As my husband says, every day is a wonderful day!! I just really wish we could pinpoint why he had such good results so that the info could be shared and used in treating others if possible. He is supposedly part of a study but I don’t know what they do with their info. It seems like there is no straight forward researched and accepted treatment of this monster. It basically is “have a resection or die” and maybe that isn’t true at all. Hopefully things will change and all of us here can move things forward in our own way. Best wishes to all- we’re going to go out and enjoy the beautiful fall weather!! Thanks again, Mary

Have a great break Jeff. You and your wife need it and deserve it. I really believe you will come back in Oct feeling stronger and healthier( if you eat your spinach!!) and able to handle any thing you decide at that time. I completely understand your wife’s behavior. I’ve only been dealing with this for a year and she has been worrying about you for years, but don’t ever think it would be better if you weren’t around. They want you to hang in here as long as you possibly can- like I tell my husband at least ’til you’re 80 or so! You can do it if anyone can and we all admire your strength and courage. God bless you and your family. Have some fun!! Mary

    Hi Jeff,
Sorry to hear that you are having some difficulties tolerating the Taxotere. Is the tumor pain a good thing according to the Docs? It seems like it should be. When do you get your scans? Take care and best wishes for your recovery this week. Mary

    Dear Suzanne,
My husband had a klatskin tumor(at the bifurtcation of the ducts inside the liver) with no spread in the liver or elsewhere. He had 5 weeks of IMRT radiation along with Xeloda , followed by brachytherapy. His tumor can no longer be seen by scans or MRIs. The only difference with your Dad and him is that his was very visible before the treatments. He really didn’t have too many negative side effects from the radiation or Xeloda. His main problem was from infections invoving his stents and drains. I am a believer in radiation if done by very experienced professionals. I know he would not be doing as well if he was given chemo alone.Try to help your Dad keep up his strength and maintain his immune system. That is very important with the cancer and his heart disease. Best wishes and God Bless. Mary

    Dear Macks,
I am unbelievably sorry for your loss and ordeal. I have been worried that something was wrong as we had not heard from you in such a long time. This is a horrible disease and it is so hard to understand why more people are not able to be helped. It really does seem like it is pure luck as far as your treatment is concerned and your outcome. I’m sorry that you had such a bad experience with the medical community and I guess I am grateful that we seem to have been very lucky to have found DRs. and a facility that have really helped my husband. It could have gone much differently at any time though just as your husband did and I am grateful for every minute and day he is with us. Please know that our hearts and prayers are with you and your family. We will all take your advice and live every day to te fullest! I pray that you will find peace and comfort in time. God Bless. Mary

    Dear Wayne,
My husband was diagnosed with a klatskin tumor in June 06. He underwent an attempted resction but it was not possible because too much bile duct would have had to be removed. They checked him all out ,removed his gall bladder and closed him up.They thought his lymph nodes were involved but the biopsies all came back negative so he had no mets. After recovering from that he went through 5 weeks of IMRT radiation along with Xelada, followed by brachytherapy. In December they did his first followup scan and they said they couldn’t see the tumor any more. We then went to the Univ. of Pitts basically to get a second opinion. They didn’t trust the OSU scans, they figured they would see something on their own scans since they felt they had better”technique” and they came back to us with the same result. They said the tumor is gone. Since then he has had an MRI every three months and it continues to simply show an area of dead tissue and no active tumor. He does have a stent but I am even hoping that if the tumor does not start coming back that they will remove it since infection is always a problem with those.I really hope your wives procedure is effective. I have never read of anyone having the results my husband has had and I would really like to read about more people doing more than just chemo! Ecspecially with the klatskin. They really don’t even try to give you hope if a resection is not possible. Keep us informed of her progress. All information people have is greatly appreciated! You just never know what may help. Take care. Mary

Good luck Jeff with the new regime. I’m betting on you being one of the 5%. Nothing new here. Tom is getting his stent changed on Thurs. We’re enjoying the summer as I hope you are too. This has been one of our best after having our worst last year. Take care. Mary

    Amilcar,
My husband had a very off again, on again regime when he was on Xeloda. He took it along with radiation and had to suspend both several times for more than a week due to problems. It still worked though so I think your Dad will be fine. I was just like you though questioning whether it would all still be effective and they all assured us it would be. Take care. Mary

Welcome back Jeff. I’m glad they caught that bone met early. It just shows how much you have to stand up for yourself when you know things aren’t right and the Docs don’t agree with you. No one should be afraid of questioning things no matter what! We’ve really learned that lesson too. Take care. God Bless. Mary

    Hi Amylea,
I’m glad you found us here and that your Mom is doing so well. She is very lucky. We were the same way as you regarding cancer for my husband. Heart disease, stroke whatever but not cancer. No one in his family has had it. I just assumed I would get it because it’s very prevalent in my family but I never imagined in a million years my husband would get so sick with something like this. It’s great to hear from someone who has had a positive outcome and who has a Dr. that is positive too. That seems to be rather rare. Best wishes for continued good health for your mother! Take care. Mary

    Dear JLIU,
My husband as been taking Maitake Mushroom D Fraction capsules( the recommened dosage), Fish Oil capsules, Beet Root extract( this specifically mentions being for bile duct health), Milk Thistle( I believe this has really helped his liver regenerate after being zapped with alot of radiation!), and a daily multivitamin. He drinks 16 oz of fresh carrot juice every day and lots of spinach, broccoli, greens and fresh fruits. You can look up these supplemnts on the internet and see what you think. I believe that we were just extemely fortunate to catch his tumor in time before it spread. He has a klatskin and it had blocked off both ducts to the point of him collapsing with what we thought was a heart attack just a few blocks from OSU Medical Center in Columbus Ohio. The weird thing was he turned yellow almost instantly. They did a super job of diagnosing him and getting stents in to relieve the jaundice. He had unsuccessful resection surgery, it was too advanced into the right duct to be removed so they looked around, removed his gallbladder and moved on to the next treatment which was a fairly high dose of Xeloda along with 5 weeks of IMRT Radiation and brachytherapy. After all of this they were no longer able to see signs of the tumor( we even went to Pittsburgh to get a scan there) and they said the same thing. The tumor is gone and the area just shows dead cancer (or scar tissue). They are pretty amazed as this does not happen very often as we all know by reading this site and others. I really am an advocate for radiation first along with chemo rather than as a last resort. I know the radiation caused some damage but I believe the supplements and diet have helped repair the damage. I concentrated on things that were good for the liver rather than just being anti-cancer. Optimum liver health is the most important no matter what treatment regiment you are on. As far as exercise we are just working outside alot now. He’s going to start doing some biking and he did lift weights and work out about 45 min a day during the winter. He had lost 70 lbs during the fall and is back to a very healthy weight now and feels great.
I am just thankful that he was treated where he was because it is the only facility that I know of that uses radiation the way they do. He would have received an entirely different treatment in Cleveland or Pittsburgh and if he had been home when he became ill that is most likely where he would have gone.Keep doing research and read as much as you can so you can keep on top of things. I learned that no matter how good the Docs are and the hospital you still have to make sure things are getting done like they should be and ask lots of questions sometimes to the point of being obnoxious.Things get overlooked otherwise. Take care and best wishes. Thanks to all above. We appreciate everyones continued prayers and support and are sending them as well. Mary

    Hey Jeff,
I really believe in the stuff so that’s very appropriate! My husband had his one year check-up and all is well. It must be the spinach and milkthistle, or maybe the carrot juice and beet pills or maybe the maitake mushrooms! Who knows ,but we’re pleased. I hope all is well with you. It sounds like you’re doing great. Keep it up and enjoy your summer! Take care. Mary

    Dear Joyce,
I’m very sorry for your loss. It’s just so hard to comprehend how aggressive this cancer is. I wish there was more that could have been done for your husband. I pray for your peace and comfort along with your family. I really can’t imagine what so many of you have been going through and pray that I won’t know for years to come. Take care and God bless. Mary

    Jean,
I am so sorry to hear of your husband’s passing. Your story of the baby and teddy bear is wonderful. I am glad you had that moment to lift your heart at such a sorrowful time. I hate that we are having to write so many notes of condolence lately. I just keep hoping that this is all a nightmare and that people can actually be cured of this insidious disease. It is obvious that most are not and we weep for all of your losses but continue to pray for our loved ones that remain in the fight. I hope you may continue to be strong and pray for your peace and comfort. Mary

Great news Jeff. Keep up the good work and don’t do too much. You sound like my husband- he’s been out working too hard but he says he feels so much better than he did last year that it doesn’t bother him. What bothered him was being unable to do anything last summer and just sitting , looking at all that needed to be done! We will be going for the one year MRI and check-up in two weeks. It’s always scary but hopefully we will continue to receive good news too. Take care. Mary
