George Nelson Schramm, Jr.

  • George Nelson Schramm, Jr., 84, of Lake Wylie, SC, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 6, 2017, surrounded by family.
  • Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to the late George Nelson Schramm, Sr., of Cumberland, MD, and Pauline Hill Schramm of East Liverpool, OH, George is survived by his loving wife of almost 50 years, Joan Norkus Schramm of Lake Wylie, SC, daughters Julie (Alec) Frisch of Atlanta, GA and Jill (Chris) Sonderby of Atherton, CA, grandchildren Max and Madeline Sonderby and Heather and Megan Frisch, and many nieces and nephews.  George was preceded in death by his parents, brother Goodwin Timhill “Tim” Schramm, and sister Deborah Schramm Brewster.
  • George grew up in Mt. Lebanon, PA, and graduated from Mt. Lebanon High School.  He attended the University of Virginia, was appointed midshipman in the Naval ROTC, was honored to live on the University’s Lawn, and graduated from the McIntire School of Commerce in 1956.  He served two years in the US Army.
  • George spent his entire professional career in the steel industry: for ten years with U.S. Steel in Pittsburgh, St. Louis and Chicago, then for 24 years with Modern Drop Forge in Blue Island, Illinois.  George was CEO of Modern Drop Forge when he retired in 1990.  In retirement, George consulted for Basic Steel before finally escaping the Chicago winters for the Carolinas.
  • George and Joan met and married in 1967 in Chicago then lived in Hinsdale, IL, for 25 years while they raised their family.  George enjoyed retirement in Lake Wylie, SC, where he happily spent time with family and friends rooting for the Steelers, Bears and Cubs, and pursuing his passion for woodworking, golf, reading, fine dining and wine.
  • In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation.
